Parenting workshop at school
Parenting workshop at school

YUM welcomes students from schools or universities, both local and international, who would like to engage with our projects. Last year, a student from the Social Welfare Faculty of the University of Indonesia spent 4 months doing her internship and was assigned to identify the needs of the Tutoring and Remedial class. She found out that the parents of the tutoring students needed support to ensure their children keep learning at home, while the schools remained closed.

To solve this issue, she recommended a home learning guidebook for parents. The guidebook is designed by the intern under the supervision of a YUM staff member and her university advisor. The guidebook contains types of student learning styles and how the parents can support their children to study at home. The initial workshop took place last year and we received much positive feedback from the parents. Therefore, we have decided to make this activity a regular part of YUM’s Tutoring program.

With the support we received from yourself and other donors, this year we have been able to run the workshop 4 times. Three of them took place at local schools and one was held at YUM’s hall. All of the workshops were led by either our Program Manager or our project officers. In total there have been almost 100 participants and at the end of the session, they all receive the guidebook. 80% of them are parents and the rest are teachers and the school principals.

Let’s hear what theMr. DD, parent of NC, 3rdgrader, said about this activity:

“I wish to help my daughter study at home, but sometimes I do not know what is the best way to help her. After this workshop session, I feel more familiar with the type of student my daughter is. She is a visual type. It is easier for her to remember something when she has seen it directly. Thanks to YUM and the school for inviting me here.”

And now, let’s hear whatMiss AI, teacher of 1stgrade, said about this activity:

“This Parenting workshop gives us knowledge that we have not known before. Through this activity, we also can share our experience from school with the parents. Now, we have the same knowledge with our students' parents. It will make it easier for both of us to support our students."

Thank you for the books!
Thank you for the books!

在大流行之前,Cipa的社区图书馆nas worked closely with several local primary schools around the area to provide access to quality reading materials. We called this program the Box of Books (BOB) program, due to the fact that the books were placed inside a box when delivered to each school. According to our survey, we found out that not every school in the area has its own library. In order to remedy this, we created a mobile library system by distributing a box of books to various schools and placing them for 1,5 months. Afterward, the box will rotate to another school so that each participating school will enjoy a different set of books.

Due to schools being closed for almost 2 years, the program had been canceled. Fortunately, schools have started reopening, and this March, we received a request from SDN Bakom (Bakom Primary School) for a box of books to be placed at their school so that their students can read books before their lessons start or at break times.

Recently, we received great feedback from the school, coming from their students:

“I love reading these books. It is simple with many beautiful pictures. My favorite things are science books and folktales.” Indah,4thgrade

“I always come earlier to school now because I want to have time to read before the school bell rings. I love all the books from the box and I have read almost all of the books. I cannot wait for the next box to come. “ Hanifa, 4thgrade.

With your kind donation, we plan to reactivate the Box of Books Program and provide more books for students like Hanifa and Indah. Thank you all!

Dear kind donors,

May the New Year come with new hopes too!

As the year 2021 ended and school holidays started, we were very surprised to find out that parents and children alike requested that the tutoring program remained open. Parents felt that their children were not learning enough from online school, especially in rural areas when all they have as a means of communication with their teachers is the Whatsapp application on their phone. As for the children, besides tutoring, both the YUM community centres include a library, toys library and a playground so children can enjoy themselves during the holidays.

Let’s hear what Mrs. Sri said about her son Rijal, who spent his time at YUM for tutoring and other educational activities:

“Rijal是我的第一个孩子,他现在在1号year of primary education. He is already able to recognize the alphabet but still lags behind in reading. Fortunately, since he regularly attends the Tutoring program, his reading has improved. His social skills are also getting better as he is now able to play in a group. Before, he always needed me to be around or else he would cry. He also can get along with other children and play confidently. Sometimes, when I drop Rijal, I bring my second child too. He is 3 years old and loves to play with the toys in the library corner.”

流感大流行是进入第三年和situation is still unpredictable. Schools were open for a short period when cases were low, but then closed again as soon as the new variant emerged and the number of cases rose. We are immensely grateful for your continuous support for this project. With your kind donation we are able to create and alter programs to keep the kids in rural areas learning. Thank you!

We take this opportunity to let you know that next month, from April 4-8, GlobalGiving will be matching all your donations up to $50 at 50% for the #LittleByLittle campaign. We hope you’ll join us during this campaign - or better yet, become a fundraiser like our friend Lily!

Hello dear friends,

We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from so many of you around the world! In our goal to provide quality education to children in our working areas, one of our key priorities is making sure that parents also understand the importance of the essential role they play in their children’s growth and development. Even though 20% of the parents' genetics will influence a child’s behavior, external factors such as parenting, nutrition, friends, school and their living environment also have a great impact. This is why YUM believes that parents also need guidance and advice around child-rearing and child rights.

In our working area in Cipanas, West Java, many of the parents of our preschoolers can be categorized as young parents. Many got married when they were 18 or 20, and were mostly triggered by their family’s financial condition. Many of them did not continue their education and graduated only from primary school. Therefore, their knowledge and maturity in raising a child can be considered lacking.

As the number of Covid cases have drastically reduced, last month YUM’s Early Childhood Learning Center organized mandatory Parenting Workshops for two groups of parents. The theme was “A Child’s Development at The Golden Age”. The session was delivered by YUM’s Project Manager in Cipanas, Samsul Maarif, who is a social worker and has been trained in several child development and rights programs. He is also the father of four children and definitely has many personal experiences to share with the audience. Besides his presentation, there was a possibility for discussions, questions & answers and the workshop ended with parents sharing about their own experience.

This is whatMrs. Hardianti, mother of Qiersya, 4 years old, had to say about this workshop:

“After attending the Parenting Workshop, I now have a better understanding about my daughter’s development. The golden age is a new term for me and surprisingly, there are many things that I can do to support my daughter ‘s development and prepare her for a better future. For example, imparting good values could start from home and we as parents are the best role models to do so.”

The pandemic has created a huge learning loss for children in Indonesia, and we need to continue to play a part in making sure the children have the support they need to stay motivated to learn. Will you help us to do this? This year #GivingTuesday takes place on November 30th. As you may know, this will be a global day of giving and it will be a great way to start getting into the ‘giving back holiday’ spirit! If you’d like to participate and join millions of global givers, you may donate at this link//www.tuuhangaido.com/projects/yumcipanas-quality-education/Your donation will provide additional education support to children in need in Indonesia.

Thank you again for your amazing contribution!

The tutoring activities have been the highlight of YUM’s education program during the pandemic. The program focuses on helping students in early grades of primary school who struggle with reading, writing, and basic math. Since March 2020, schools have been closed and students in rural Indonesia can only communicate sporadically with their teachers and learn mostly on their own.

Since the start of the program in July 2020, thanks to many different donors, this activity has been able to help more than 400 students. These numbers are possible because YUM is collaborating with 5 primary schools and 14 local teachers in our area of Cipanas, West Java. Due to the local schools’ enthusiasm for this program, the tutoring activity is considered as an after-school activity and scheduled after school hours. Tutoring takes place either in the school or at one of the teacher’s houses. Each group is divided into small learning groups consisting of a maximum of 10 students with 1 teacher.

Let’s hear what Miss Fatonah said about this program. She is a teacher at SDN Cibadak and teaches the 1st grade class:

“In my opinion, the tutoring and remedial program held by YUM has been a great help for us. The 1st-grade students who have never been in the classroom and met with their class teacher before can now have the experience even though it is only in a small group and for a short time. Being in a small group makes it easier for me to be more focused on the student who is struggling with numbers and simple math. After two months of this program, I can proudly say that most of my students are able to do simple math when before this, they still found it hard to count after 100.”

Thanks to your support, YUM is able to give more children an opportunity to take part in this program. The program is now not only recognized as YUM’s program but is now a part of the wider community by our partnerships with schools in the area.
