Summary

Ready Aiders Foundation plans to teach coding to 100 girls yearly from Mathare Slums in Nairobi Kenya. We believe that equipping young girls in the slums gives them a better shot at economic independence and escaping the social ills of early marriages, sexual exploitation, unwanted pregnancies, and abuse. The girls from our project in Mathare use their coding skills to create apps and websites for individuals and organizations at a fee. YP STEM is a partner. You too can partner by donating now.

Challenge

Many girls from low-income areas like Mathare in Kenya do not get equal access to opportunities to study STEM-related courses due to backward cultural perceptions about girls , lack of safe spaces and mentors, and poverty levels in those slums, and many young girls end up as single parents with no skills and are trapped in the vicious poverty cycle. This project will equip over 100 girls annually with skills in coding and give them an opportunity to earn a living and transform their lives.

Solution

The ICT center and Digital library for girls in Mathare offers three months course in basic computer skills, coding, graphics design, and website design. The skills and certification they get after the courses help them be able to employ themselves by offering those services to their contacts, friends, and families at a fee. They also get to enhance their knowledge of various topics through the digital library where they read ebooks during their free time.

Long-Term Impact

Within a three-year period, the project will have educated 300 girls and equipped them with digital skills in graphics design, website design, and coding. This will in turn help the girls rise out of poverty and be able to be the drivers of change in their communities by encouraging other girls to embrace science and technology-related courses. The Digital library will be a safe space for girls from the area to come and read e-books and avoid peer pressure related activities from their home area
