The Rebeldes movement rose in Bañado Sur in response to a lack of access to basic public assistance, which amplifies women's daily struggles. It has become a channel through which women can freely share their trials and experiences, develop their political activism, and discuss their understanding of the mechanisms and effects of patriarchal violence.
Since its inception in 2015, the organization Rebeldes del Sur has addressed women's specific needs with projects such as shelters in times of flood or for those suffering from domestic violence, workshops, and soup kitchens. These efforts have allowed women to get organized while impacting one another, strengthening their activism.
Jessica, a militantfeministand community activist, is one of the participants and beneficiaries of the movement. She talks about how the community- and neighborhood-focused approach anchored in the organization's work has offered her a new perspective on how she perceives herself and her relationships with those around her in the Bañado Sur community.
While the pandemic has impacted the women's ability to get together, it has not kept them from continuing to reach out to others. Indeed, with funding from Fundo de Mujeres del Sur,the Rebeldes shot a documentary, telling the organization's story and sharing their daily work in the hope of inspiring other women to form their own collectives.
The Rebeldes del Sur initiatives are focused on care, sisterly support,and training to ensure that they will be united, organized, and ready for revolutionwhen the next crisis comes.
