Empower street children through education by helping us to build a Kimbilio primary school. Street connected children have little or no access to education, especially if they are a girl. Help us provide an inclusive school for these marginalized girls and boys, where we strengthen community cohesion by educating them alongside local children. Education will enable the children to transform their futures.
In DR Congo there is a high number of children not attending school or any form of education. Approximately 54% of six year old's attend school. Poverty plays a large part in this, and many have to make choices between their child's immediate needs such as food and shelter or future needs. The area of Lubumbashi where Maison Kimbilio is situated is very deprived of local services and resources with very low attendance at school. Families are unable to pay school fees required in all DRC schools.
We aim to provide good quality education with school fees set at an affordable rate. This will enable local children to attend alongside former street children in the care of Kimbilio. The school will be resourced with good resources and well-trained teachers, able to engage children for whom this is their first experience of school. We aim to make it a flagship school, well known in the area for it's care and attention in helping each child achieve their potential.
The school will care for 180 children, with 6 teachers and a support staff. Alongside this we envision that the school will affect the families and surrounding community in such a way that approximately 1400 people will see the benefits on this project each year. This project will not only help equality in education but improve community cohesion and the acceptance of the often stigmatized former street children. We hope to open in September 2021, please help us make it happen!
